Dr. J.I. Packer suspended

Words fail me, he was my theology professor in Vancouver B.C. from 1982-1984.

1. Brian from T19 says:

For what? The link doesn’t say.

2. Timothy Fountain says:

Is “suspended” the Canadian version of “inhibited”? Was this a Regent College action, or an ACC action? Really, the link tells nothing. What’s up?

3. f/k/a_revdons says:

It must be from Regent College.

4. Toral1 says:

Well perhaps we shouldn’t guess but more likely suspended as an ACoC minister. He was retired homourary assistant at St. John’s Shaughnessy and was reported to be planning to surrender his ACoC license and receive a new license from ANiC and +Harvey: http://www.anglicanplanet.net/TAPCanada0803b.html

5. Timothy Fountain says:

Hmmm…an article from a Canadian paper uses the term “suspended” similarly to “inhibition” in TEC

Aarrggghh. This link really messed up the blog formatting. PLEASE do not cut and paste long links! Thanks

6. physician without health says:

I am praying for this great man of God.

7. Observing says:

The Canadian Anglican church is proving even more inept at handling those leaving than TEC. Nothing like making martyrs of those recognised as some of the best in the church to ensure the exodus gathers steam…..

8. Randy Muller says:

The party in power in the ACC must be convinced it can and will “win”. It seems like it is self-destructing to me.

9. Milton says:

+Ingham’s cowardly and contemptible action is a badge of honor awarded to Dr. Packer for faith, integrity (the REAL kind) and courage that +Ingham doesn’t begin to understand or recognize or embody.

10. seitz says:

Zero story = more commentary.

Is there any real news here?

11. Milton says:

Hey, what gives? The link worked fine a minute ago, but when I
tried to visit it again the site said that “what you’re looking for
isn’t here”. Hope the hackers haven’t gotten to Michael Daley’s site like they took down CanNet!

12. Milton says:

That should read, “Michale Daley’s new site…”

13. William P. Sulik says:

As #4 indicates, this could be connected to St. John’s Shaughnessy:

14. Observing says:

Yes, there is news here. I wonder how many people are asking themselves if they should be on the ACC side of the fence, or should they rather be choosing the Southern Cone like Packer ?

When I became a Christian, one of the ‘required readings’ was ‘Knowing God’ by Packer. As it has been for millions of Christians.

15. seitz says:

#14 — great. Where is it please?

16. MikeS says:

I’m suspecting a PR disaster in the making.

Or someone with too much time and administrator access playing around with their dreams on a public webpage. It happened to the Green Bay Packers recently when their website erroneously announced this morning that Brett Favre had retired after forty days of discernment. Lots of fuss and feathers flying around after that one.

17. Grandmother says:

Here’s probably the reason.. More likely the ACoC’s doings, they work pretty fast up North.

18. Milton says:

#15-Where is what? The news? Or maybe the fence?

19. seitz says:

Packer relinquishes = Packer suspended? It would be good to have solid facts/headlines.

20. catherine says:

Try the first link Kendall gives again and ignore the remark that what you are looking for isn’t there. Follow the menu on the right. Look under “categories” then under “Canada” then click on Diocese of New Westminster and a relevant article will come up describing Dr. Packer as having received a “threatening letter” of suspension. I think it is news…and encouragement of the ongoing re-alignment.

21. robroy says:

Should read “JI Packer threatened with suspension.” See link in #20.

22. Chris Hathaway says:

Ingham should stick his suspension where the Son don’t shine.

Which is in his cathedral.

23. Toral1 says:

Sounds like same letter the other clergy in departing New Westminster congregations got: http://canadianpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5g2QBxS5I3sTA9s0Oh1n64cYDunrw

24. William P. Sulik says:

They never learn. As Larry Norman (RIP) observed: “You can’t keep a good man down.”

Obi-Wan: You can’t win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine. [/blockquote]

25. Michael Daley says:

Folks:

I have posted the updated story, here:
http://www.lambethconference.net/canada/?p=92

Warm regards,
Michael

26. Michael Daley says:

“Hope the hackers haven’t gotten to Michael Daley’s site like they took down CanNet!”

No, they didn’t eat it. I took the original story down because it contained some errors. Sue me.

28. Michael Daley says:

Inhibition is analogous to suspension in Canada, yes.

29. Choir Stall says:

The sign of a satanic attack is when the innocents are slaughtered.
This is a bloodless murder.

30. MikeS says:

Michael Daley,

Please accept my apologies if I offended you or anyone else who read my comment. It wasn’t my intent to cause offense.

31. anglicanhopeful says:

Has this been confirmed via press release or mainstream press reporting? Just curious why no statement from Packer himself anywhere.

32. Michael Daley says:

anglicanhopeful, there are some complexities with this story that I can’t share at this time. It should become more clear in the next 24-48 hours.

Besides, when was the last time we relied on mainstream journalism or broadsheets for confirmation?

33. Choir Stall says:

It was in ‘Gone With the Wind’ when Rhett said,
“What have you done, Scarlett, to make hell yawn before you?”
The mitered malaise goes on as the stiff-necked and proudful stampede towards hell.

34. Nuj says:

I haven’t made a comment in a few years and so I seem to have done something wrong. My first attempt at this seems not to have been sent through the ethers….
my apologies if the is more or less a duplicate.

The formal charge in New Westminster is this:
Canon XIX of the Anglican Church of Canada
‘Notice of Abandonment of the Exercise of the Ministry’
The notice is based on [what the diocese says are] these facts:
1. That you have publicly renounced the doctrine and discipline fo the Anglican Church of Canada; and
2. That you have sought or intend to seek admission inot oanother religious body outside of the Anglican Church of Canada.

The idea that Dr. Packer and the other faithful priests have been charged with ‘Abandonment’ based on ‘public renunciation of the doctrines and disciplines of the church’ seems outrageous.

The Canon also makes provision for a bishop to be similarly charged.
Michael Inham has been very public about his excentric views of the doctrine and disciplines of the Anglican Church of Canada. His book ‘Mansions of the Spirit’ speaks for him quite adequately.
It could be argued that he has been the catalyst for much mischief and has not kept the promises made at his induction as bishop.
I have deep sorrow in these days.
Nuj

35. dl says:

Michael,
I heard rumour of this from someone quite close to the ground in Vancouver. I too await the details.

36. Michael Daley says:

Hey nuj!!! Man I miss you guys!

37. Nuj says:

We are tired but well. Hope to speak to you soon.

38. dwstroudmd+ says:

Ingham’s panties are in a twist because he thinks he’s the only one with the ability to ignore canons, define the “faith” of standing behind the ECUSA/TEC/GCC/What-Up-ites, and look to be a liberally progressive canuck hopes-to-be-avaunt-guard. I guess the twisted panties are a tad uncomfortable since he’s hoisted on his own petard on the flag pole of his own making! Either that or always being second fiddle in a third row section … always in the USA shadow and under the protection of their primary activism : “we’re behind you, Kate, whatever you want to do.” Like the former ACCanada tailgater at Dar es Salaam. What was his name? Anyone remember? And the ACCanada was mentioned in the Windsor Report too, wasn’t it? Once.

Think of this as an attempt at getting recognition … of any sort, for Mikey, for for the ACCanada, for the first of their 15 seconds of fame. Wishfully, anyway…………

39. jamesw says:

Seitz – yes, anyone who was aware of the situation knew that Packer was connected with St. John’s and that when St. John’s voted to leave the ACCanada and join the Southern Cone that Ingham, as the local ACCanada bishop would suspend Packer. So, you are correct that technically this is not “news.”

But it IS “news” in the sense that Packer is one of the more well known Anglican theologians both in the Christian world at large and also throughout the Communion. Packer’s pending suspension will make the breakup of the Communion more personal in a way that the news of yet one more parish’s departure won’t do. Surely the news of Packer’s suspension from the ACCanada will have a large impact on many lay persons, priests, bishops and primates within the Anglican Communion.

Sort of like a news story saying “20 people killed in a terrorist bombing in London” compared to story “Prime Minister Gordon Brown among 20 people killed in a terrorist bombing in London.” Surely the latter has a much greater impact.

40. Jim the Puritan says:

Gee, I even have Jim Packer’s writings bookmarked on my “Favorites” list:
http://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/bio/jipacker.html

41. azusa says:

Jim Packer: a great servant of Christ and a very humble man.

Michael Ingham: who???

42. Jim the Puritan says:

I guess it’s just as well John Stott retired; probably he too would sooner or later face being defrocked in today’s inclusive Anglican church.

43. Newbie Anglican says:

-Ingham has no shame whatsoever. Amazing.

44. justice1 says:

As a Regent Graduate (Packer was my prof. too), and past member of St. John’s Shaughnessy in Vancouver, and a priest in Canada, I would say this is not unexpected. Of course Ingham would do this. He has to. Would he inhibit the licensed clergy of St. John’s, and leave Dr. Packer out? And I suspect that had Ingham left Packer out, we would have heard something quite to the point from Packer about it. I doubt seriously he would care for such treatment.

45. Dan Crawford says:

Dear Dr Seitz:

Once the “facts” are “known”, can we count on ACI to provide the positive spin?

46. Dilbertnomore says:

Ingham, having found the bottom, continues to dig.

“The floor of hell is paved with the skulls of bishops.”
St. John Chrysostom

47. Fr. Andrew Gross says:

James, Amen! It’s news because it puts a face to the disaster.

If the Catholic church had stood by and allowed Mother Teresa to get quashed by heretics…it would have been news.

If the Baptist convention had stood by and let Billy Graham get ‘suspended’ by heretics…it would have been news.

I dare say that Packer’s suspension might have more effect on the average person’s (and even ‘moderate’ primates) opinion on the crisis than hundreds of anonymous parishes and priests.

48. Saint Dumb Ox says:

Dr. Seitz,

I trust you are familiar with “The Last Battle.” While the conservative branch may be behaving like Tirian it really does no good for anybody if you behave like the Cheshire tom cat.

I respect you sir, but disagree with you.

49. Ralph says:

#25, the Star Wars quote hits the mark.

What a fantastic mistake! To make J. I. Packer a martyr at this point? Unbelievable.

Yet another shiten shepherde (see the Prologue to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales) striking another shepherd’s sheep, so it would seem.

Perhaps this bishop will go after Alister McGrath next.

So many exorcisms to do, so little time…

50. seitz says:

I am trying to understand how JI Packer, a man with whom I have worked on several occasions, is part of some animus from ACI? Is asking that we have facts now also a crime? What a strange set of comments. Perhaps +Howe can be brought in and hit with a club.

51. Phil says:

You asked what the story is, Seitz-ACI. J. I. Packer was suspended. Doesn’t that count as news in your universe? Isn’t that a “fact?” Do we have to have more than one “fact” in a story before you’re interested?

52. seitz says:

No–I am not familiar with the Christian mythology of CS Lewis in all its parts. I have found it distracting from the biblical story. So, whatever touche was being dispensed missed my dull mind.

53. Ross Gill says:

I seriously doubt if Dr Packer is as worked up about this as we are. He may even find it amusing that an arrogant purple shirted little git should really think it important enough to suspend him.

54. Saint Dumb Ox says:

Dr. Seitz,
Of course asking for facts is no crime. But even the threat of suspension is still news. No one is suggesting the ACI has any part of this, but I believe your apparent ambivalence to this news is upsetting to many.

How far is too far, sir? (not that this is, but my question is: where is your line?)

This thread is about Packer, not Dr. Seitz- or ACI. ‘Com on, Folks, stick with the topic of the thread.

55. The_Elves says:

+Howe? What does he have to do with this thread? This elf agrees with #56. Lighten up, Folks, and discuss the ideas, not individuals.
